Long out of print, the first three volumes of the John Whitmer Historical Association Journal have now been reissued in a new combined edition, with a new introduction by William D. Russell. Originally published in 1981 through 1983, these volumes include pioneering articles by:
  • Davis Bitton
  • F. Henry Edwards
  • Paul M. Edwards
  • Richard P. Howard
  • William E. Juhnke
  • William J. Knapp
  • James E. Lancaster
  • Roger D. Launius
  • Carol Cornwall Madsen
  • W. Grant McMurray
  • Susan Curtis Mernitz
  • Thomas J. Morain
  • D. Michael Quinn
  • Geoffrey F. Spencer
  • Clare D. Vlahos
Volume 3 (1983) includes then-RLDS Church Historian Richard P. Howard's groundbreaking article on the practice of plural marriage in the time of Joseph Smith Jr. The idea that polygamy had been introduced by Brigham Young and his followers had become almost an article of faith among the membership of the RLDS Church. Howard's careful research allowed church members and leaders to begin a dialogue that led to a richer and more complete understanding of the church's past.
